Wil Myers Interview
Wil Myers has been one of the most talked about prospect amongst scouts in North Carolina since his two home-run performance at the East Coast Professional Showcase in August 2008. A long limbed, multi-positional, extra-deluxe athlete; Myers is one of the most personable, charismatic guys you'll ever meet. The toolsy senior is a super teammate and a fierce competitor on the diamond. Myers is known for his top-drawer baseball skills and his jaw-dropping raw hitting power. We're pleased Myers could answer a few questions for IMPACT SCOUT.
Andy Partin: You are rated the top prospect in North Carolina by us as well as most other publications. You've got a healthy scholarship to play at the University of South Carolina and you are linked to several discussions about being a high draft pick. What's been the key to your success on the baseball field? Wil Myers: Hard work is the key to being successful. This past offseason I dedicated myself to a strict training regime and have worked countless hours to improve my baseball skills. Partin: It's refreshing for me to watch you play and having fun playing the game. How important is it to have a good time on the diamond? Myers: The game of baseball has always been fun for me and I am very thankful for the opportunity you gave me to play on the Dirtbags, I had a blast! There isn't any other place in the world I'd rather be than on a baseball diamond. Partin: There seems to be some debate with scouts on where your best position is on the field. Where do you enjoy playing the most? And, what position do you see yourself playing in college or professional baseball? Myers: I enjoy playing everywhere on the diamond. In one game alone this year I played first, third, catcher, short, and then came in to close the game on the mound. Catcher may be my best position and I have worked hard to refine my skills behind the plate. I enjoy being behind the plate, but I'll play anywhere the team needs me. Partin: Two-part question here... What is the best part of your game and what is the part of your game you'd like to improve the most? Myers: I'm not sure there is any one part of my game that stands out above the rest. I always try to improve in all areas and do whatever it takes to help the team win. Partin: You obviously are receiving a good amount of attention from professional scouts right now concerning this year's draft. How's that been? Is it distracting? Myers: It hasn't been distracting at all. It has been great getting to know the scouts around the area. I have really kept my focus on my classes and helping Wesleyan win another state title. Partin: How's the spring season going so far? Myers: The weather has been brutal so far and hopefully we won't have any more rainouts. We are playing better and better each time we take the field. Partin: Where do you see yourself playing next year, University of South Carolina or in professional baseball? Myers: It has always been my dream to play professional baseball but I am committed to play at South Carolina. I am excited to play in their new stadium, develop under Coach Tanner and his coaching staff, and hopefully take a couple trips to Omaha over the next few years. Partin: Looking back a little now... What is your best memory as baseball player? Myers: I'd have to say being selected to play in the East Coast Pro Showcase this past summer in Lakeland, Florida. It was really great. I got to meet and compete against the best of the best from around the country. It was also sweet winning the State Championship at Wesleyan last year. Partin: Who's the toughest pitcher you've had to face? How'd you do? Myers: I have faced a lot of good pitchers from across the country over the past few years, but if I have to name one that is a tough competitor, it would be Chris Munnelly (UNC signee). Every game he pitches, he brings it. I'd have to say our respect for each other is mutual. Partin: Last question... What kind of advice can you offer to the underclassman players out there who want to play college baseball? Myers: What you need is a little bit of talent, extreme hunger and passion for the game. Work hard and keep your nose clean. Enjoy yourself every time you take the field. If this is your approach good things will happen. Oh yeah, if you ever get a chance to play for or against the Dirtbags, you better bring it!! I have to say thanks to you for giving me a chance. It was blast playing for you and being known as a Dirtbag.
